Safety Tips For Hanging Christmas Lights
The holiday season brings a special kind of magic, and few things are more cheerful than a home glowing with Christmas lights. Stringing up those twinkling bulbs is a fun tradition for many families. A little planning ensures this fun activity is also a safe one. Following some simple steps will keep your focus on celebrating, not on accidents.
Check your lights first
Before you hang a single bulb for your Christmas light installation, look at your lights. Plug each strand in to ensure all the bulbs light up. Check the wire for any cracks, frays, or damage. Look at the plugs to see if they are broken. Do not use any lights that look old or damaged. It is better to use a new set than risk a fire.
Pick the right lights for the job
Not all lights are the same. Some are made for inside your home, and others are made for outside. Check the box or the tag on the lights. Ensure you are using outdoor lights for the outside of your house. Using indoor lights in the rain or snow can be very dangerous.
Use a safe ladder
You will probably want a ladder to reach your roof or high spots. Always place your ladder on a flat, steady surface. Have a family member or friend hold the bottom of the ladder for you. Never stand on the very top step. Always keep your body centered between the ladder’s sides.
Be careful with staples
It is easy to grab a staple gun to hold your lights in place. Do not staple through the wire itself. You could cut the cord and cause a shock. Instead, use special light clips or hangers. These are made to hold the wires safely without damaging them. They are easy to find and work much better.
Keep cords clear
Pay attention to where you run the electrical cords. Do not run them where people might trip over them. Keep them away from walkways and doors. Also, ensure they are not pinched in windows or doors, as this can damage the cord.
Turn them off at night
Your beautiful lights do not want to be on all the time. When you go to bed, or when you leave the house, turn the lights off. This saves energy and prevents the lights from getting too hot. Using a timer can make this step very easy. You can set it and forget it.
